TITAN, may be our future home.

Fellow Earthlings. Here’s a post from the past. ūüôā

the martian diaries

This is TITAN,one of the moons of Saturn. What’s so special about this moon?? This is the only place in the solar system, where life may exist(other than ours of course). This whole planet is made of solid ice and raging volcanoes.Oh…that’s just great !! Life will surely exist!!, Hold that thought! On the surface we may not find much, if we look beneath it’s crust of ice there is a large possibility of finding organisms. Not bacteria and stuff but real developed organisms.

Scientists believe that the ice had been there for all long time and we cannot ignore the possibility of life. These organisms might not have a slight similarity to those on Earth. They will surely look alien.

Water content probably be present beneath the crust and one day we will discover our brothers in the neighbourhood! These organisms would have evolved over time and may have developed ways to live in such…

The Interstellar Traveler: VOYAGER

Do alien life form exit? Are they intelligent? Do they posses technologies that we never dreamed off? These are some of the questions that would have passed through our mind at least once in a lifetime.

Humankind’s thirst for knowledge, and curiosity has rewarded with him ground-breaking technologies and innovations. He has unraveled many secrets of the universe, like finding Earth like planets, predicting age, shape, fate through theories and explanations. But the only thing we have yet to find out is life form other than our own.

Enter,the Voyager probes,two of them-Voyager 1,Voyager 2.Voyager 1 was launched in September 5,1977 but surpassed it’s successor,Voyager 2,which was launched on August 20,1977.

jupiter and saturn

Voyager 1 was lifted off with a Titan III E rocket. The primary mission was to encounter outer planets such as Jupiter & Saturn .

Voyager missions also laid emphasis to study the moons of both planets ans the significant discovery was the volcanic activity in IO.(one of the moon of Jupiter),and predicting life supporting conditions in the moon of Saturn:TITAN(Read more on the link) ,using remote sensing methods.Even after ending it’s primary mission both Voyagers are travelling at speeds average of 15 km/s.

On September 2013, Voyager 1 crossed the heliopause of the Sun.(Outer most part of heliosphere) i.e leaving sun’s influence ¬†and into interstellar space. Both Voyagers carried a gold plated audio, visual disc containing the location of Earth,in case some intelligent life form ¬†may encounter it.

Next destination is Oort Cloud which is 300 years away and would take 30000 years to pass through it.
Good Luck, and Godspeed Voyager!!

10 Things You Never Knew About The Moon

living for science

‚ÄúThere are nights when the wolves are silent and only the moon howls.‚ÄĚ ¬†~ George Carlin

People don’t know enough about the moon. Not that it’s specifically important or anything, but honestly, how many times have you looked at the Moon and just moved on without really considering it’s impact on your everyday life? Have you ever wondered: How did the moon get there? What the heck is it made of? How does it stay so perfectly in sync with the Earth? It’s time to answer all those questions and more…here are my top 10 favorite facts about the moon that you probably never knew:

1. The Moon is the largest natural satellite relative to it’s primary planet in the entire Solar System.

The Moon is MASSIVE. Well, on a planetary scale, not so much, but comparatively to most anything we can think of on Earth, it’s pretty stinking…

5 Must Know Definitions of Rocky Bodies in Space.

A body smaller than a planet and made of rock ,metal, and other minerals. There is a large belt of asteroids between Mars and Jupiter. They revolve around the Sun between 2.1 and 3.1 astronomical units.Example : Ceres,4 Vesta.

¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† ¬† A chunk or rock or metal that enters into Earth’s atmosphere & burns up in a fiery show.

images (1)
A chunk or rock or metal that has fallen to Earth from beyond it’s atmosphere. When it passes through the Earth’s atmosphere ,it is seen as a flash of light as it burns as a result of heating caused by friction.

A chunk of rock moving through space.

Comets are heaps of small particles of rock and dust like materials surrounded by large masses of easily vaporized substances like ice, water and ammonia, and methane. They move in highly elliptical orbit and spend most of their time away from the Sun.The formation of tail of a comet is due to what is called Radiation Pressure.Example:¬†Halley’s Comet.

Nebula or Space Clouds

One of the most beautiful sights in outer space is that of the nebulae.

Unlike clouds in our atmosphere ,these clouds consists of ionized gases basically hydrogen and helium.
Now why are they important?
They are the birth place of stars.Gases and dust come together to form huge masses that eventually
become stars.i.e (Nuclear Fusion begins).Nebulae span over light years of distance and temperatures can be extreme. The catching names are given by their shape. The spectacular display of color is due to the chemical composition and ionization of gases.

Most of the Nebulae are formed from supernova explosions.
Some examples are : Crab Nebula,Boomerang Nebula,Fox Fur Nebula.

ALMA Reveals Ghostly Shape of ‚ÄėColdest Place in the Universe‚Äô

At a cosmologically crisp one degree Kelvin (minus 458 degrees Fahrenheit), the Boomerang Nebula is the coldest known object in the Universe ‚Äď colder, in fact, than the faint afterglow of the Big Bang, which is the natural background temperature of space.

Astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) telescope have taken a new look at this intriguing object to learn more about its frigid properties and to determine its true shape, which has an eerily ghost-like appearance.

As originally observed with ground-based telescopes, this nebula appeared lopsided, which is how it got its name. Later observations with the Hubble Space Telescope revealed a bow-tie-like structure. The new ALMA data, however, reveal that the Hubble image tells only part of the story, and the twin lobes seen in that image may actually be a trick of the light as seen at visible wavelengths.

“This ultra-cold object is extremely intriguing…
